Wednesday Wanderings: Madhugiri

History has always fascinated me. In particular, forts. The symbols of royalty and power. Of huge kingdoms and powerful armies.

Madhugiri is the largest monolith in Asia (and 2nd largest in the world). And on its peak is nestled a small fort built by the Vijaynagar dynasty. A couple of weeks ago I went on a trek to reach the peak of Madhugiri hill. On its way, I saw many fort walls, drainage structures and minarets. Below is the photograph of a a majestic structure which I am guessing was a watchtower of the fort – one of the strategic points of any fort – the first place from which attacking armies can be spotted and the fort defenses be put on alert.

  1. As I’m sure you are well aware,Piper is a Scot name, so kith and kin are always relating stories of military battles around castles in Scotland. On my maternal side, my grandfather’s last name was Graves, another Celtic-influenced name, and my maternal grandparents, too, were heavily inspired by Arthurian legends, full of castles and knights and royalty. Also, the beautiful mountains in the panorama look vulcan in nature, like some of the old cones around where I live. I’d like to journey here, too.

  2. Looks like a good trek! I’ve not explored the South much, only been to the big cities and Ooty of course. Must/will do it sometime.

@ Rebecca, isn’t it interesting to see the way cultures so different can find common grounds (similar cones!!)?

Very cool this looks man! Would like to see more fotos if possible – it looks awe inspiring from the top. I can’t even imagine how people would build these things in the old days without any kind of tech that is available to us now!

  4. This place looks amazing…WOW! I used to live in Karnataka, and never knew about it…what a waste man…

p.s. I initially thought this was Machu Picchu from an unusual angle :)
